The Femmy Awards are intended to honour women located in the National Capital Region who have made outstanding contributions to the struggle for women's equality.
In order to be considered for the award, a nominee must:

• Identify as a woman
• Identify as a feminist

(We realize that some wonderful women and equality activists do not identify as feminists. However, we maintain the "F-word" has a proud history and we'd like to keep using the word "feminism" to describe the struggle for women's equality for now.)

• Be located in the National Capital Region

(We'd love to honour women located elsewhere, but it is just not possible for us logistically. So we challenge other groups celebrating International Women's Day to host their own Femmy Awards and honour their own feminists across the country! For any inquiries or assistance with this, please feel free to contact us.)

• Have made significant contributions to the struggle for women's equality

(We welcome your detailed ideas about what these contributions might be on the nomination form.)

We Took it Back

Last thursday, many women from Ottawa and Gatineau got together to take a stand against violence against women and reclaim the night as a safe space for all. It was wonderful to see women from so many different backgrounds united together for the important cause.

After the March, Women's Organizations in Ottawa welcomed all those present to City Hall to give information on their services. The Women's Event Network did a wonderful job in coordinating the event and offering great food and entertainment for all! The Slam Poetry/Spoken Word Artists and Musician were very inspiring and captivating.

The Ottawa RebELLEs were happy to help organize the event and see so much enthusiasm from young women. We hope to collaborate with them in the near future.

Although the March was vibrant, many of us asked ourselves, why weren't more women of Ottawa present?

Ladyfest Ottawa (LFO) is a non-profit, primarily women-organised music and arts festival that is open to everyone.

Ladyfest Ottawa is a volunteer-driven organisation that showcases women’s artistic expression and shares ideas through music, performance, film and video, exhibitions, panels and workshops.

Ladyfest Ottawa is part of a tradition of grassroots-organised festivals showcasing the talents of women artists... Ladyfest Ottawa is an inclusive, feminist organisation. We feel that providing a venue for women artists counters the obstacles and discrimination that women often face, including sexism, homophobia and racism. We also try to address these issues in our workshops, along with encouraging a D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself), hands-on approach to skill sharing. We believe that political action can be fun and creative!

We are also committed to building communities, collaborations and conversations among women in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. We are proud to showcase local artists.

Ultimately, we hope Ladyfest Ottawa inspires women everywhere to organise themselves and create similar spaces that allow women’s creative works to be seen and heard.

Ottawa RebELLEs at International Women's Day 2010

In March, The Ottawa RebELLEs participated in 2 International Women's Day events. The events offered a great opportunity to meet and network with other feminists and organizations in our region and raise awareness on feminist issues.

It's nice to know we're not the only ones that think feminist critical thought is still essential today!

We performed our bilingual manifesto at the Women's Event Network event, 'Still Searching for Bread and Roses'. This was our second time performing it in the Ottawa Capital Region. What fun!

We were especially inspired by the Raging Grannies and made a pact that we will reunite in 50 years to follow their wonderful lead!

What does proroguing parliament mean?

Today, in many cities across Canada, there will be rallies against our government's proroguing of parliament, but why are people so upset?

According to the Anti-Prorogation website, Proroguing means:

1. All 37 bills being debated in Parliament are thrown in the trash. Discussion on bills starts from scratch in March, wasting months of hard work by all parties. These bills included new crime legislation, limits on credit card insurance rates, etc.
2. Committees investigating accusations of torture of Afghan detainees stop working
3. Discussions and decisions about the pension crisis affecting Canada’s seniors stops
4. Questions about Canada’s inaction at the Copenhagen climate-change summit are silenced. Opportunities to move forward with Canada’s plan for sustainable development are stalled for over a month.
5. Your MPs cannot raise your concerns in Ottawa
   

"That government officials or politicians may have been negligent in safeguarding the treatment of Afghan detainees, thus violating the Geneva Conventions, is of no real concern to most Canadians, the Tories maintain.

They are almost certainly right. But the fact remains that proroguing Parliament shuts down the committee that was the source of the most embarrassing revelations about government bungling in Afghanistan. The Military Police Complaints Commission, which was also looking into the affair, is effectively suspended until the government gets around to appointing a new commissioner.

By government design, all official inquiry into this matter has been terminated until March, at least. The Conservatives aren't concerned? They have a strange way of showing it."

The forum will explore sex and gender as determinants of health and the concepts of sex, gender, diversity and equity as they relate to health. Panelists from the Centres of Excellence for Women’s Health across Canada will discuss the importance of a sex- and gender-based approach with practical examples from the brand new book, Rising to the Challenge: Sex- and gender-based analysis for health planning, policy and research in Canada.

This forum is important for women, those who provide their care, those who research their lives and plan policies that affect them.

Take Back the Night 2009 Ottawa Division

Take Back the Night is an annual event held around the world to raise awareness about violence against women and to reclaim the streets as safe for all. Take Back the Night celebrates women’s diversity and strength, and promotes a society in which the safety of women is guaranteed.

Each year more supporters participate in this event, bringing awareness of the need to end violence against women in our communities. According to Statistics Canada, half of Canadian women (51%) have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16 and one to two women are murdered by a current or former partner each week in Canada. This is a chance to publicly celebrate women’s solidarity; women will not be passive and accept the violence against them but will instead speak out and take action together for change

Please come out and show your support for our mothers, sisters, friends and loved ones.
